Q: Use iPhone as iPod and Fitness Tracker

So, couple of I guess strange questions, but I'm having a hard time finding an answer..

I have an unlocked iPhone 6S that I purchased off of eBay with a crack screen for cheap. I'm looking to use it as an iPod and a fitness tracker. Obviously the iPod part is easy. But my biggest question is, in order to use it as a fitness tracker do I need to activate it? Will GPS capabilities, for most efficient tracking, be active even if the phone isn't activated on a network?

Thank you for your time!

    Hi LadyG4309,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I'm sure we can help you out with your question, or at least get you pointed in the right direction. To access most functionality on an iPhone, it would need to be activated. If you are having issues activating your iPhone, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

On the other hand (since this is a previously owned iPhone), if you are seeing an Activation Lock screen, you may find this article more useful:

If your iPhone is locked with Find My iPhone than you cant use it as fitness tracker. But if it's not than you can activate it and then remove a sim

No, you don't need to the phone to be activated to use GPS. However, many apps that use that GPS data for mapping require a data connection in order to work. You may find that apps that you want to use won't work without a data connection. The iPhone 6S will be able to do some step/distance tracking using the motion co-processor.
