Ripped CDs end up with dropouts or skips

A few CDs end up with dropouts of skips after being ripped and played back with iTunes. I re-rip them and skips will show up in different places. I usually encode to 320 mp3, full high quality settings. I've also tried Apple Lossless and aiff. Same thing. I also tried using Max to rip the CD. Same thing.

What is wrong?! This is highly annoying.

iTunes 12.3.2.35, OS X 10.11.3

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11), Superdrive

In addition to KW's suggestion to try error checking in iTunes the free application XLD has more powerful error checking and reporting.

As this is happening at different places I wonder if your optical drive is having problems. You can try a drive cleaning disc which might remove errant dust or lint particles periodically blocking the laser. If the drive is more than 4 or 5 years old it could also be the drive is starting to spin unevenly. It is also possible the disc itself is unbalanced.

I always have error correction on.

The drive is only a few years old and hasn't had much use other than ripping CDs and a few app installs.

I got one problem track ("Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" from Bowie's Backstar) to rip without any dropouts by using the cdparanoia ripper in Max. It worked when the other rippers in Max did not, even with the same error correction settings turned on. I'm now re-ripping a different CD (Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury's "Drokk: Music Inspired by Mega-City One") this way that had multiple problems on every track when ripped normally with iTunes. So far so good.
