Slow OS after waking from sleep MacBookPro Retina

More of an annoyance, but it's reproducible, so I'm posting it here so other can pitch in..

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina with 720GB SSD( 2.7GHz Core i7, 16 GB Ram). Whenever I wake it up after is has been closed, not connected to power and asleep for more than an hour or so, it becomes unusable after I open it back up.

OS is El Capitan 10.11.3

The screen displays, but the mouse pointer is painfully slow and jumps all over the screen in slow motion as I try to put the cursor in the password box to unlock it.

After I login, the whole OS in very, very unresponsive. It could take ten minutes to start a new application.

Looking at the Activity Monitor, it shows random applications using 100% of the cpu for no reason.

I have looked up other posts about this similar issue, but they seem to resolve themselves after ten seconds. The only way I can resolve mine is to restart the laptop.

One thread suggested looking at launchd to see what was set to run and note anything that had a non-zero status... I did, and here's mine..

Of note, com.apple.logd has a status of "1" and com.apple.watchdogd has a status of "-43"

Any suggestions on these statuses if they are a real issue? Or am I looking down the wrong path on this one?
