Q: RE: reformat firmware for Ipod touch ios6.1

Hi,

I am needing to reformat my 64GB Ipod touch ios6.1 to 7.1 or greater to be able to install most apps that are currently available.

Any thoughts on feasibility and how to do this?

Not trying for most visual apps, just podcasts, ie: radio and the like.

Please, If anyone can help, list step by step instructions. Not too sure reformatting through I-tunes does it. Has only restored to original factory settings of the Ipod Touch at this point. NEED to Install new Firmware and any patches. j

Thanks, JoelSF

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.1

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

If your iPod only has four rows of apps on the Home screen plus the dock row your iPod can't go to iOS 7 or beyond.

Only the 5G and 6G iPod can go beyond iOS 6 and the 6G original came with iOS 8.

The 5G and 6G have 5 rows of apps and the dock row.

If yo do not have a 5G iPod then yo maybe able to get the latest version compatible with your iPod

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
