Q: can i download El Capitan to an external drive and use it from that drive

I'm running OS 10.5.8 on mac pro intel. Need it to run all business software. I know it's old, but it works.

So can i download OS El Capitan onto an external hard drive and use El Capitan from that?

Only if your Mac’s compatible with El Capitan and you install Snow Leopard to get access to the Mac App Store. You’ll be given the option of choosing to install to it while setting up the installation.

    You need 10.6.8 to access the Mac App Store and download anything later than 10.6.8.

     

    The 10.6 DVD can still be bought through the Apple online store. Search for snow leopard.

     

    the 10.5 to 10.6 upgrade is one of the most benign ever.
