Q: Aperture stalls when making previews

Recently moved my Aperture Library (2,1 TB, about 119 000 images) from my old MacPro to en external hard drive (LaCie 2Big 8TB RAID 0) connected to a new iMac. Had to move the images project by project and by merging libraries. Took some time (about a week!) but now all the images are in place.

However, when the new Aperture Library is making previews, it stalls halfway through. When checking Activity it says:

Activity: Processing

Description: Generating Preview for _MG_7299

Status: 37667 Remaining

And there it stalls. Pause Activity is possible but not Quit Activity. I can use Aperture and the computer, but I have to force quit the App every time. I checked the 7 files named _MG_7299 and there is nothing wrong with any of them. I reprocessed them all with the newest RAW converter and try to generate new previews. Even  took away all the adjustments and updated from original.

Also did Repair Permissions, Repair Database and Rebuild Database.

Also used Onyx.

So, what else can I do to make Aperture work properly?

Aperture 3, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

You could hold down the shift key while launching Aperture.  This will defer the generation of previews for the whole session.

Then you can select the photos where you want to have previews and select to render the preview manually from the Photos menu in Aperture.

Thank you. The solution seem to be to delete the previews of the files that makes the process stall and then force process new ones by holding alt + Update Preview/ Generate Preview. To hold shift while launching Aperture (new trick to me) helped a lot to identify these images without. I have still no idea why some images are making the process stall while most of them runs smoothly through the create preview process.

Or worse, if an original image file has a corruption, it can cause Aperture to crash over and over again, if the Aperture Preferences are set to create previews. In that case you need to remove the corrupted image file from the library.

There don't seem to be any corrupt files. Now the preview process runs like crazy, only 31 000 images left!
