is there a way to update an older Apple TV to 2015 functionality? I want to have a newer app that is available only with the newest Apple tv's on my version 2 or 3. Is there a way to update the older Apple TV?

That is crazy. No way to mess with the firmware through a connection to a mac???
The hardware of each model of Apple TV is very different. Only Apple TV 4 comes with enough power and memory to run tvOS.

You can update to the Apple TV 4 by entering your address and credit card details at the Apple Store online.

As much as that actually happens, yes.
Presumably at some point down the line there could be an Apple TV 5 with an even better processor and other features, and even further away developers might only want to support the latest version of ATV, but in principle it can remain current as long as developers are interested in it.

No, I suspect that with every Apple TV there will come a point where the only way to update will be to enter your credit card details at the Apple Store and have them send you a new one.
