iPhone 5 and 5GHz WiFi

I have an iPhone 5 running iOS9.2.1

My wifi network has 2.4 and 5 GHz speeds available and as a security precaution, I do not broadcast my SSID for either band.

I am able to continuously connect to my 2.4 band.

Connection to my 5 GHz band is sporadic. Often my iPhone 5 drops the connection and will not reconnect. Frequently it does not even detect the 5 GHz SSID, even thought it WILL detect the 2.4 and neither is being broadcast.

After going ballistic on my ISP and two days of troubleshooting my router, we have concluded that the problem does not reside with the router or the ISP.

Looking for a solution to the problem of my iPhone 5 not always connecting or establishing a consistent connection to the 5 GHz wifi.

Probably a weak 5 GHz signal from the router. Have you tried a different 5 GHz router? My iPhone 5 works fine with three different 5 GHz routers (with SSID on). For testing purposes, try turning on SSID. (You can use a different SSID during the test if you are really concerned about broadcasting the real SSID.) If it still fails it means the router has a weak 5 GHz signal or you are too far from the router. 5 GHz does not propagate as well as 2.4 GHz, especially though walls.

False sense of security. The SSID can be gleaned from other devices that are connected by a determined hacker. All you are doing is making it inconvenient. Better security is to require a strong password. It is no big deal that the SSID is seen by others. Without the password they can do nothing. I doubt your network is worth the effort from any determined hacker.

Malcom, signal is fine...when it can be connected. I've stood 3-feet away, held the iPhone directly in front of the antenna, and even yelled at it! My laptop connects when I'm outside on the porch to the 2.4 freq and I've never noticed a connection problem.

I'm wondering if my Linksys 1900AC router intermitently stops broadcasting on the 5GHz freq?

I'll give the broadcast SSID a shot & let you know.
