how do you merge cells
Via the menu: Table > Merge Cells.
But don't do it! Merged cells are trouble, causing various mysterious problems with sorting and other behavior.
Almost always you can easily achieve the same visual effect in other ways.
SG
Highlight the cells you want to merge. You can go to your tool bar < Table < merge cells. Easy function to work with! If a problem of any kind emerges you can go right back to Tool bar <Table < unmerge cells or just go to tool bar undo!
On my machine, as posted above, the option is in the menu, not in the toolbar. But my advice still stands. Don't merge cells! Achieve the same visual effect in another way.

Hi birdytantan,
Adding to SG's caution to avoid merging cells. You can create the illusion of merged cells.
There are no merged cells in this table.
The text in Cell A1 "spills" across into Cell B1 with these settings in Format Panel > Text for Cell A1
Alignment Left, turn off Wrap text in cell.
You can fine tune the illusion with Format Panel > Text > Layout > Indents
Regards,
Ian.
Left-click on Cell A1 | hold Shift Key down | left-click on Cell A4 | right-click over the selection and choose Merge Cells from sub-menu. To undo left click on the selection and again right-click to get sub-menu and choose Unmerge Cells.

Thanks for the instruction regarding merging more that two cells at a time, and for including instructions on how to undo that choice should it prove to ead to other issues.
That said, I'd agree with SG and Yellowbox—merging cells is generally an action to be avoided.
Regards,
Barry
