I am trying to release some hard drive space, my storage states that I have 15gb of photos on my macbook, I have been through every folder and searched using every extension I can think of but I can't find the photos that are taking up the space, can anybody suggest what/where these might be?

Try downloading and installing OmniDiskSweeper and see what it says in the way of files and folders that using disk space.
You did back everything up before you started this project?
I do hourly back ups and only removing files not applications. I can't find a single photo left on the mac which is really baffling me, I have even removed the Apple screen savers
Search for the files using the method listed under -
Locate large files
So I followed both responses and this is the only file that I can find that I don't know what it is..file:///lost+found/iNode4655804...anybody know what it is??? There are no photograph files coming up??

So when you say you have looked everywhere;
1. define everywhere
2. how did you search? Did oyu actually go to your /users/you directory and begin looking at folder sizes and progressively dig into large ones?
Its old fashioned and tedious, but anything else is subject to errors, IMNSHO.

I had already done this and it is not finding anything out of the ordinary other than thisfile:///lost+found/iNode4655804 ...and I have no idea what that is!
I did this first, old ways are usually the best....still can't find where this 15gb of pictures are!! I have searched using jpg, cr2 (canon camera raw,) on...you name it I have tried it...still can't find them.
Have you tried using Finder and going to: Your Home Directory > Pictures
If you are looking under About My Mac > Storage, that is where it puts your pictures.

if you cant find large folders in the finder - then they are not there. You seem to know how to look - i'd be more comfortable if you had come back with all the folder sizes in your home directory though....
How about something like dropbox - which could be located elsewhere (mine is in root)
