Q: KEYNOTE NOT PLAYING THROUGH PROJECTOR

I have a Keynote presentation which I have so far been unable to play through the overhead projector at my presentation site.  The hookup details that apply are a long cable down from the overhead, terminating in a VGA plug. I am hooking a HDMI to VGA adapter to the end of that, then plugging the HDMI into a Lightning-HDMI Apple dongle.

As far as the projector goes, it consistently displays it's standard "No Input/Connection" messages onto the screen. On the iPad itself all looks normal for the most part, and it does seem to sense a connection or at least the fact that a dongle is present, in that you can no longer just play the show in preview mode at all. When the Play button is pressed, you usually get at most a flicker of the display, no reaction in the projector output, then right back to the editing display.  Very occasionally, it will momentarily kick into the Presentation Mode on the iPad but that last well less than a second before it quits and dumps back into edit mode.

I tried Force Quit on the app there, and also tried a Reset on the iPad; neither had any effect or made a difference that I could see. Can anyone possibly suggest anything else to try (aside from swapping out adapters and connectors, which I don't really have time to attempt before tomorrow, when I would like to put on the show).

TIA for any possible assistance.

    Addendum to the above:

    1.  I did test the Lightnig - Digital AV Adapter on our television, it at least is working properly.

    2. Not noticed at the time, when connected to the projector, is that I did not see the little square that appears around the PLAY icon on the menu bar when the app/iPad is ready to play to an external display.  Perhaps that was part of the rapid flickering I saw from time to time, when it actually looked as though the PLAY icon was momentarily dimming or blinking out, then reappearing; it never displayed in a steady state, at least.
