Q: iMessage is hanging on OS X 10.11.3

I'm using a MacBook Retina 15" which I recently wiped and reinstalled OS X 10.11.3 due to having recurring slowness issues.

I use Dropbox and Backblaze for backups.  I've installed all my software (all mainstream stuff - office, omni-group, a few UX tools etc and firefox and chrome) and everything is tickety-boo apart from iMessage.  If I open it, it hangs (rainbow circle just turns) and the fans go flat out and the computer just whirrs away for hours until a force quit iMessage.

How do I reset iMessage and get it to just work?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), google fibre

My eyebrows surely raised when I saw the CPU usage in general, but more specifically by Photo's. Could you disable the Adobe software and test again? Also I would like to have a look at the error log from the console. There might be a repeating error, where the same lines are repeated all over. We are interested in that.

Apologies for the time delay, but I was out.

Another which made me sit up straight was your opening statement, where you reinstalled due to progressive slowness. The high use of Memory, CPU and the slowness suggests a possible Hardware Problem. Do you have an external HD that you can boot feom, or another Mac at hand so that you can boot from the other HD in target mode? I ask that so that we can verify and proof your Hardware configuration.

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

If that doesn’t work, repeat the above but delete the com.apple.imagent.plist

Thanks to leonie and Ralph Johns (UK) for some information contained in this.

    Hi Leo,

How do I disable the Adobe software?   Do you mean uninstall?   I don't (knowingly) have any adobe apps running.  There is one I occasionally use, but it's not launched most of the time.

I don't have a working external HD but do have access to another mac - but don't know how to do target mode.  What cable do I need?

Ignore the 2nd test result.  Adobe (which I'm brand new too was still running.  I've now uninstalled the CC app and the Adobe software so it's mostly off.  I don't know where to remove the balance of what's on the machine.

Here's the 3rd test you asked for.

I've also found console but I don't understand what you want me to print out from that?

Holding down command J doesn't give me a show library folder.  I've tried spotlight searching for com.apple.iChat and can't find such a file that way either.  So unable to do the rest of what you suggest.

    Hi,

    Based on:

... everything is tickety-boo apart from iMessage.  If I open it, it hangs (rainbow circle just turns) and the fans go flat out and the computer just whirrs away for hours until a force quit iMessage.

IN a Finder window use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.

Select the Library that appear in the Menu list.

    Navigate to Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages

The Archive item in here should be a folder (possibly with Saved Chats in it)

At some Updates it gets corrupted and shown as  File icon.

Messages will not start with this happening as it then tries to process the file which is wrong.

    Quit Messages if open.

Change the name of the file item to something else.

    Recreate a Folder called Archive

Refill the contents if you need to from your back up method.

    Restart Messages.

Also check the Contacts App > Preferences > Accounts.

OS X 10.11 generally turns everything on in System Preferences > Internet Accounts for linking with the Contact app.

This can cause problems as the Contacts app is never sure if it has updated all the List as it then checks several lists.

in the Accounts part of Contacts make sure only one Account is active.

Messages will be waiting forever and a day if this is the Case (the Etre Logs suggest not though).

You seems to have other issue as well which those that are helping already can help you with.

    Hi Andrew,

You will need a thunderbolt cable or iWires cable, depending on which the Mac takes. The iWires will work with both. Connect the two to each other.

One the other mac: Restart whilst at the same time depressing the T. That Mac will start up in Target Mode.

On your Mac, the present one: Restart and hold down the Alt or Option key. The Mac will start up displaying the internal HD and the HD of the Mac in target Disk. Select that to boot from. Allow it to start up, log in and test if all is working correctly. If so, we now know for sure that the HW side, but not the HD, of your Mac has been verified as working correctly. We can now shutdown, and boot up normally.

Thus, only your SW configuration remains and of course the HD.

Follow the advice of the kind gentlemen above to fix the Message problem as far as the SW is concerned. After that has been cured, we can proceed to the verification of your HD. Following the same Target Disk process, you can now boot up the other Mac with your HD and find out if the problem replicates itself. If it does, we will go through a process to save what can be saved and to correct possible problems.

This has worked.  Now Photos is stuck.  I have a large library - masters in the cloud - with optimize locally set.  I've about 160,000 images from weddings and family events over more than a decade.  It's downloaded 130,000 and is stuck on 29,000 remaining.  We have google fibre (1,000 MB up & down) so not a bandwidth issue.  It's been open and on for 24hrs and not shifted by 1 photo in that time.  So. def. stuck.

    Any thoughts?

An early Good Morning Andrew, (I know it is late afternoon there)

Your question/problem with Photo's could be solved on iPhoto for Mac forum.Steps that I followed in iPhoto was in short: disconnect from the internet( so that you dont loose the stuff in the cloud. Backup. And another backup. That is just for in case, something.... Start the App with the Alt/Option depressed. => Choose the Library while depressing both Alt/Option and Command. That will give you different options to execute repairs in the library, including the database.

Heed to the warnings of Backups.

Inspect and verify that you have not lost anything. If something is lost, try the recovery procedures.

After all is done, reconnect to the internet and syncronise.

PS. Ralph is probably still fast asleep, he needs some sleep too!

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop syncing. Wait a couple of minutes, then recheck syncing.

Have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?
