Thunderbolt port not working

i have a 2012 MacBook Pro still works fine. i bought a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter to play ps4 using MacBook as a screen. Whenever I plug it in it flat out shuts down my MacBook. Also when I turn it on while it's connected I can't find any display opgions. Please help!

A normal Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter is for sending video from a computer's Thunderbolt port to a display's HDMI port.

You need a video capture device to send HDMI video from the PS4 to your computer's Thunderbolt port.

Make sure HDCP is off.
