Q: Thunderbolt camera muted, laptop camera works
With Google Hangout (the only app I have tried) the camera works only with the laptop, the Thunderbolt display camera is disabled when the laptop is closed. How do I enable it?

Try using your display's camera with OS X's Photo Booth and QuickTime Player apps.
If the camera works properly with those apps, the problem must be related to Google Hangouts. In that case, check Google Hangouts Help or the dedicated Hangouts forum. Hangouts users who post there may have already solved your problem.
