I previously wrote Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule, but the very old Time Capsule has been replaced by a Comcast modem/router. Also, my wife now wants to write PC backups. I can partition and format an external drive for both PC and Mac backups, but can I then access and write to it from each machine over wifi? I am concerned about AFP file sharing. Apple Support document Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support says "If your backup disk is on a network, the network server must use Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing." That sounds like I cannot backup via the home network and must now be directly connected. True? I am on El Capitan - OS X 10.11.3 .
