The power switch on the shuffle can be in either ON or OFF position when charging.  I usually leave it in the ON position all the time, so that I don't need to deal with the tiny switch, and also to avoid wearing it out.  When disconnected, the shuffle goes into sleep mode when inactive (not playing songs).

Thank you.  When the shuffle is charging the light is flicking orange.  Why is it orange?  When I disconnect it, and turn the shuffle back on, the light is green.

The blinking orange light is a warning.  It means Do not disconnect - Eject iPod in iTunes before physically disconnecting.  It does not indicate battery status.

When you Eject the iPod in iTunes (click Eject button next to iPod's name), the iPod's "disk" is unmounted by the system.  Leave it connected and watch the light; you'll see it become solid (not blinking).  Solid light means OK to disconnect.  Now, its color has meaning.  Solid Orange means battery is chargingSolid Green means battery is fully charged.  You can safely disconnect it either way.  NOTE:  It does not blink green.

While the iPod is disconnected, the light color has a slightly different meaning.  Green means strong charge (more than 25% charge remaining)Orange means good charge with less than 25% charge remainingRed means weak charge.
