Connecting to the Internet

Hi,

I am thinking about buying a new MacBook and I am really confused about how to connect to the Internet!

I have a PC and would like the Mac and PC to be able to connect to the Internet using a wireless router - can someone please explain to me how I do this, as I cannot find any simple guides that explain this.

The MacBook has AirPort Extreme - is this a wireless networking card?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to MacBook forum,

yes, the airport built in on macbook is the wireless networking card.

all you have to do is turn it on if it still turn off and choose your wireless router ssid or name and enter password if it is protected and you are set to the internet connection.

And your pc, is that a laptop or a desktop, if it is a desktop, I think it better off wired using ethernet cable or you have to buy usb wireless or pci wireless card for that, but if that is a laptop, maybe it is already have the wireless nic built in as well.

Good Luck.

Thanks very much for the replies.

I have a desktop PC but would like a wireless connection so that the PC and Mac can be online at the same time for the Internet and also I would like to use the Mac elsewhere in the house.

If I get a wireless router, am I right in saying that I can connect my PC to it with an Ethernet cable and plug in the phone line too? Then that PC doesn't require a wireless card right? And neither will the Mac because it has built in AirPort Extreme?

Thanks again.

NatMU1...
This is how it works.
Apply for DSL subscription. You will get a DSL modem or sometimes, an integrated DSL modem with wireless router.
Phone line goes into the DSL modem and if you have a splitter, the line can also extend to a phone handset.
From the modem/router, connect your desktop PC with an Ethernet cable and u can surf the internet from your PC.
With your macbook, you can access your internet line wirelessly.
Hope this clarifies your concern.

Welcome to apple forum.

Password to get a wireless internet connection had nothing to do with sign up for anything.

It was set by the wireless access point (WAP) router owner to protect their connection so not everybody can use it.

You can obtain that if the router owner give you the password.

If you go to free hot spot, you don't need any password, just select the wireless connection and it connect it for you.

But some hot spot required you to subscribe or sign in to certain provider and you can use it anywhere that provider available.

Good Luck.
