Ipod Classic 160GB locks up Itunes when connected

I connected my Ipod classic to my laptop to sync with Itunes and it went through all the processes as usual except at the end it came up with an error message saying the sync failed. I retried the sync and got the same message. I unplugged the Ipod only to find that it had wiped all of the content except the games. This laptop is the original computer it was setup to sync with. When I plug the Ipod back in it now it sends ITunes into a mode of constantly trying to connect and says it is connected on the Ipod screen but when you check the PC it says ITunes is not responding. The picture of the Ipod does show in the top corner but everything is locked up, you cant click on anything or scroll at all. One time the curser sat there spinning in thinking mode for about 20 mins and then came up with this message.

Unfortunately I can't get ITunes to respond so I can't even get to the summary tab to restore. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have to travel in two days and really want it to go away with. Thanks in advance.

Not too bad, but max. isn't supposed to get over 50. My guess is that it is stalling when trying to read one of those pending sectors. Try shutting down the computer, connect the device when it is powered off, turn on the computer, then see if you can restore the iPod. If it still locks things up try the DFU restore method, or failing that the reformat.

HI

Thank you, I was able to access the ipod after restarting with it plugged in, I then reformatted it and I was able to sync with the library. Unfortunately I did not try listening to it before I went away and when I did go to play it, it would just think on a song for a bit and then skip to the next song without playing. Not sure if there is a fix for this or whether I will just have to resign myself to the fact it might just be stuffed.

The following steps should resolve issues around syncing, assuming all of the content you want is in your library.

(If it isn't see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device)

  1. Backup device.
  2. Restore as a new device.
  3. Restore the backup you made earlier.

N.b. A feature introduced with iOS 9 referred to as app thinning or app slicing allows each device to download only the code and resources needed by that device, resulting in smaller downloads and better use of storage on the device. As a consequence the device no longer holds the universal version of the app that could be installed on any device so transferring apps is no longer supported. You can however download past purchases from iTunes and/or enable automatic downloads of app purchases to make sure that iTunes always has the apps that you want on your device. A further change to the way restores are implemented means that all private app data is restored and apps that are not in the library are queued for download from the iTunes Store over Wi-Fi, in a similar fashion to the way restore from iCloud works. Not having the apps in your library isn't the drawback it once was, however you are still at risk of losing a favoured app if it is removed from the store and you don't have a local copy.

Go back to the Re: Corrupt iPod classic post and try the DFU restore or reformat methods. If and when you can clear all the pendings there is a chance that you can get some further useful life out of the device. If the pending count keeps on climbing then the drive has likely failed, in which case you can look into options for replacing the drive.

Can I also ask a similar question? I've got the exact iPod Classic 160GB (software version 2,0,4) and yesterday, when trying to upload the recent addtions from my library to the IPod classic I got the exact same message shown above. I did manage to restore the iPod to the factory settings and the device itself looks fine to me, but of course all the music is gone. Whenever I connect it to iTunes I keep getting the message that I should restore it to factory settings.

The iPod classic screen says 'connected' but I don't see it in the list of connected devices 😟

Can somebody help? I am far from a computer expert (so please use easy language :-)) but the iPod can't be broken, it never fell, nothing happened to it!

Thanks for your advice. Ann in Belgium

If you put the iPod into Disk Mode does it show in Windows Explorer and iTunes?
