I bought extra icloud storage of which I still have 41GB available but if I try and take a photo or video I get a message saying 'Cannot take photo There is not enough available storage to take a photo. You can manage your storage in settings.' Why am I paying for extra storage if I can't use it??

I don't understand, I thought my photos were backed up to icloud so if I have all that available storage there why can't it be used to back up photos? Some of my photos must be backed up that way already as when I want to view them I have to wait for the little circle to finish before I can do so
iCloud is a syncing system, not an external 'hard drive'. If you delete them on your device, they will delete from iCloud. To increase space available, go Settings/iCloud/Photos and select Optimize iPhone/iPad Storage. That will reduce the space required by about 90% when fully effective.
You shouldn't confuse the iCloud storage and the internal storage on your phone. Phone storage can't be expanded. All you can do is save your important data to iCloud and then remove it from the phone.
My phone says my storage is full and won't take photos but I have plenty of free icloud storage available?
