Hi. I have a Macbook Pro - OSX 10.6.8 w/ Safari 5.1.10. I need to update my Safari but don't want to update to the newest version. I'd like to update to the best or most compatible version for my Macbook. Can anyone tell me which version would work the best? Thanks.

The one you have: any later version of Safari requires an upgrade to the operating system.
Note: Adobe Flash can be current under 10.6.8, but Java can not. Firefox and Chrome have newer versions than Safari under 10.6.8.

It is not so much which operating system is most compatible with your Mac version, but whether or not all your purchased software and hardware will be able to run on a newer operating system. If you downloaded http://www.etrecheck.com we can at least give you some hints as to what may be able to run or not by copy/pasting its results into the post.
If you want to stay with 10.6, Firefox is still being updated.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
