Q: Problems with email in El Capitan 10.11.3

Updated my OS a few weeks ago and, since then, my mail flies in (top right corner of my screen) alerting me that it is delivering, but then disappears in once it gets to my mailbox. If I'm fast enough, I can see it in my mailbox before it escapes! Closing my mail and re-opening it allows the mail to deliver, but opening and closing the mail program all day is getting pretty old. I'm on a MacBook Pro vintage 2011, but my husband has a MacBook Air 2014 and his started doing the same thing last week right after updating the OS.

 

Call me frustrated! Or, is there a solution out there?

    10.11 introduces a new Mail database. If your old mail database did not convert properly, this has been known to cause some problems.

     

    What protocol (POP. IMAP) and what Provider is giving you this trouble?

    IMAP: One account is GoDaddy and one is Bluehost, plus a Gmail account thrown in for good measure. Doesn't seem to matter which account the mail goes to though. It is happening to all of them.

    There are reports of problems with GoDaddy accounts that contain in excess of 10,000 message already.

    Don't think I've got 10,000 emails, but since it is happening to the Google and Bluehost accounts as well, I'm not sure that's the issue. Regardless, is there a solution?

    I had a serious problem when I upgraded to 10.11  -- Mail would not even run.

     

    I ended up making a paper cheat sheet of all the settings for Mail and Calendar and related services, and deleting ALL my "Accounts. Then I built them back up, one at a time, from my cheat sheet.

     

    To the best of my knowledge, nothing was lost. Mails on Mail servers stayed there just fine. Copies of emails "On My Mac" were re-imported and eventually worked as well.

    Hi, do you know how common this problem is? I think of upgrading from 10.8.5 to 10.11.3.

    I really have no accurate way of knowing.

     

    I would estimate based on the very few reports seen here, that it is rare. (When a serious problem occurs with regularity, these forums are a lightning rod for folks with problems, and thousand-post-long threads seem to develop overnight. There are no such threads, at least not in the Mac Pro desktops forums, based on Mac Mail.

    I also would like to ask: is there an efficient way to check whether

    1. the applications that are currently on my computer - it's 10.8.5 now - will be compatible with 10.11.3

    2. there are some malware on my HD, like, for example CleanYourMac, etc, that I am not aware of having.

    3. there is a list of such malware to tell me what I should be looking for.

    Moving 10.8.5 to 10.11

     

    1. Compatibility: Most Applications are widely compatible EXCEPT: those that require a Driver for custom Hardware, where the developer is a slacker and has not yet obtained a Mac Developer Certificate from Apple. The extensions do not load and the Hardware will generally not work without them.

     

    List the ones most important to you and a wide range of readers can tell you if there are compatibility issues.

     

    2. Hidden Malware: not very likely, most of it is "in your face" if present.
