Advanced Tools in IMovie

I am working in IMovie 10.1.1 and am trying to use picture in picture and green screen. When I follow the instructions to activate advanced tools I go to preferences and there is no tab to get to advanced tools the only thing it shows is "slo mo clips", "photo placement" "clips", "transitions" and "theater". My previous version had tabs that included "General, Browser, Video and Fonts". Why doesn't the new version allow me to access the general tab and enable advanced tools????

Did you read the help file that GeeD mentioned http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/#/mov82da1338a? It shows the tool bar which appears at the top of the viewer window when you select the attached photo or clip that you placed over the timeline clip. The same tool bar will appear when you select any clip or photo in the timeline. If you do not see the tool bar there is a problem with your iMovie installation. It might be a preferences issue. Try launching iMovie while holding down the command and option keys. This will bring up a window where you can delete iMovie preferences. iMovie will recreate the preferences file to the default values. If this does not fix the problem then I would suggest you reinstall iMovie. iMovie 10.1.1 significantly changes the interface from earlier versions but the features are still there with a few exceptions.

There is no advanced tool menu in iMovie 10.1.1. All tools are available in the tool bar above the viewer. You can access green screen and picture in picture by clicking on the tool bar button on the left side of the tool bar that looks like superimposed squares. Just select your attached clip in the timeline and click on that button and choose the option you want.

iMovie 10 was a complete rewrite and has a very different user interface form earlier versions. So most information on earlier versions is no longer relevant. It is necessary to study the version 10.1.1 help files. They are also available at: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/

The way iMovie is evolving, any book will be out of date very quickly. For example in going form 10.1.x to 10.1 the whole way events and projects are accessed was changed.

Plushieboy: Green/blue screen facility is covered in the iMovie help files at: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/#/mov82da1338a

GeeD,

You are clear. I see now that the book did not mention software version 10.1.1 that I am currently using. That caused a bit confusing, but plenty. His book did not mention version for iMovie either. The book front cover should highlight version that the book is compatible with. Version 9.

I might take another look at version '13 manual. This book has to make clear its for 10.1.1 and this time I prefer another author with step by step approach in taking advantage of the IMovie and to the point. I don't want any more second guessing...just waste of time.

Thank you for the clarification.
