I have 2007 iMac and can not get AirPlay icon on menu bar. It has OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 and does show "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" System Preferences/Displays. AirPlay icon shows and works in iTunes. Is the iMac being a 2007 the limiting factor/ Why?

Yes, mirroring requires a Mac from 2011 or later as it uses the newer processor for video encoding. The alternative would be to use a 3rd party program like Airparrot but as its done through software and relies on the CPU results will vary so best to use the trial first.

You should still be able to AirPlay videos, using the AirPlay icon that appears in the video player on a web page or in an app. That works differently from mirroring, which transmits a real-time video of the entire screen. It depends what you need, of course.
