Web of Trust (WOT): Request Detailed Instructions To Uninstall and Delete

Please help by providing step-by-step instructions on how to uninstall and delete all remnants of the Web of Trust (WOT) plug-in from a macbook pro running the OS X El Capitan (10.11.3) operating system. WOT is a plug-in available from Apple: https://safari-extensions.apple.com/?q=plugin . I installed it on my macbook pro. Within an hour of installation, the computer started operating at alarmingly high temperatures. The fan is working overtime in a failed attempt to try to cool the computer hardware. I consider this plug-in to be more harmful than helpful due to the potential for overheating the notebook.

Separately, I hope Apple considers removing WOT from their website and reevaluates all software plug-ins offered to the Apple community. I want to trust that Apple thoroughly tests and evaluates plug-ins to determine their usefulness, balanced with safe integration with their operating system before offering them on their website.

Safari plug-ins are located in

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

or they can be removed from Safari

Safari>Preferences>Extensions (tab)

highlight the plugin and click the "-" icon.

if you feel WOT should be removed by apple and they have caused a grievance with you let Apple know

apple.com/feedback

otherwise be sure that WOT is causing residual damage and there is not else that could cause this like any mac antivirus or any mac 3rd party tool which manages your mac "mac keeper", "clean my mac" as these are known scam ware packages which historically have been linked to massive issues with OS X

Any Mac AV or 3rd party cleaning tool should be removed from the system entirely.

Jimmy,

Thanks for the quick/easy instructions to uninstall WOT. I uninstalled it and within 1 minute, the computer cooled down. Not an exaggeration... it only took 1 minute. As a follow up, I want to be certain that ALL remnants of the plug-in are removed from the notebook. Are there other areas within the OS where I should root out and delete related files for this plug-in even though they might not be affecting the OS? For example; how should I seek out and delete related files from the cookies folder, if they potentially exist in cookies? This is just one example. I'm unsure if there are other areas within the OS where I should also look to find and remove even the hint of this plug-in. I want everything related to WOT that might still be lingering on the OS, to be deleted, even though it's no longer running.

You asked about Mac Keeper. I do not have it installed on my computer and I'm cautious to make sure it doesn't get installed. Now that you mention it, what are your thoughts, or anyone else's, on Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?

Thanks again. Your quick and easy instructions were tremendously helpful.

Malwarebytes was developed by a trusted and respected contributor here, and many users recommend it to people who need to remove malware/adware from their computers. There are those who don't think such programs are necessary, and that you should remove malware/adware manually, and that's a perfectly valid option as well. You should use whatever method is easiest for you. I've used Malwarebytes on my system, so have countless other users, and I've never experienced anything bad happen afterward. Unlike other anti-malware programs, it doesn't prevent malware or adware from getting on your computer, it just removes it. You're still on your own as far as keeping it off your hard drive in the first place.
