Brand new iPod shuffle not connecting to Macbook.

I just bought an iPod shuffle 4th generation. The end of the USB cable provided that plugs into the iPod feels loose and it is not connecting to my Mac. Is the iPod faulty or am I missing something?

If it "feels loose," make sure you have fully inserted the USB docking cable plug into the shuffle headphones jack, as shown in this document
