Q: Looking for a replacement for iPhoto

I am currently using iPhoto 9.6.1.  I have all my photos catalogued by Folders, sub-folders, albums.

Desktop Photo 2016-03-11 at 4.53.51 PM.jpg I have been unable to organize the new "Photos" application in the same fashion, and the program just seems very awkward to use.

I am running a iMac 27 inch, late 2009 unit, with OS10.11.3.  iPhoto is starting to act up under this new OS.  I am looking for a replacement photo program that will allow me to maintain my current manner of organization as provided above.  I would also like to keep additional features such as the edit.  Faces is also nice, but could do without. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance for any help available.

You can still do that with Photos.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder.

    PsimulatedEvents.png

To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.

You can create folders in the sidebar that contains other folders and albums.

You can do exactly that with Photos, plus additional editing features and faces and so on. Best of all, it will migrate these from your existing library.

Thank you for the detailed reply.  I had previously tried photos in the fashion you described.  I initially ran into problems in that when I tried to do a nested folder and put duplicate picture in it it would not work.  It moved the picture I wished to duplicate into the new folder, but at same time removed it from original folder.  I just tried this again and it worked as it had in iPhoto.

Follow up question.  In the editing area of iPhoto, there were controls for Levels, Exposure, Sharpness, and Definition.  They do not seem to be present in Photo's that I can find.  Do they exist?  If so, where might I locate these functions again.

Also in the Photo's edit area there is a listing of Extensions.  When I click on this and then "more", I am taken to the Extensions area of System Preferences.  In the sidebar, "Photos", it states "Not enabled".  Could someone explain what this means, and if additional extensions can be added to Photos, how this might be done?

    Thanks again.

Only albums and other folders can be placed in a folder.  However, you don't need to duplicate a photo to put it in more than one album.  just drag it into the albums you want it to appear in.

With the photo selected that you want to edit, press the Return key, and you will see this screen:

If you click on Adjust, you will see this:

For the Extensions, you would click on More to see what extensions are available for you to add:

In the Photos section select any apps you have, as well as External Editors, close the window.

Then, click on Extensions again, and then on External Editors. This is what I have:

An Add-on to Gail's great screenshot:

To have the full benefit of the available adjustments, click the blue "Add" text  in the upper right corner of the adjustment panel.

It will let you add adjustments to the minimal default set.

Enable all checkmarks in the list you will see, to be able to use the detail and advanced adjustments.

    Screen Shot 2016-03-12 at 21.44.37GMT.png

Many adjustments have advanced settings.  Click the downarrows beside the title to reveal the sliders for the advanced controls, like highlights and shadows.

The Photo editing extensions are installed by applications you purchase from the AppStore.

I published a list of the extensions I tried as a user tip, see:   Photo Editing Extensions for Photos for Mac

For the "External Editor" extension see OT's user tip:  :  External Editors in Photos Are Here

Thank you Gail and Leonie.  Your advice, as well as that from Old Toad was excellent and very helpful to me.  Before your posts  I was quite unhappy with the loss of iPhoto but now think Photo's does take over quite well and will fit my needs.  In the adjustment area I had not noted previously the "add" button.  I  now have the added features I was hopping for.  Also in the Extensions area:  Appears I have no extensions installed, thus the blank area on the right side of preference window.  Thanks again Leonie for the link to additional extensions.  I will be following up on your lead.

Old Toad:  You provided info on how to create pseudo events for Photo.  Is there some way events can be combined in Photo as they were in iPhoto?  In my case, using pics I take of my pet as an example, unless I could combine new "events", I would soon have an unusable number of events all named "Mollie".  Not a deal breaker if this can not be done, but wold be nice.

The fake events are regular albums.  If you have plenty of albums, create folders for your albums like you did in iPhoto.

You can drag all your Mollie albums into one folder, if you want to keep them separate. Then close the folder, and you will find them all in one place. To merge two albums into one, select all photos in one album, drag them to the second album, then delete the first album.

I find, that working with albums is best done in the sidebar as shown in OT's screenshot. this way we can drag easily from one album to another, or move albums between folders.

I don't use standard albums much. I prefer smart albums based on keywords. If I want an album with all photos of a pet, I assign a keyword "Mollie" and the photos will appear automatically in the smart albums with the constraint "Keyword is Mollie".

You could even us the faces album for this.

To find all photos from a particular shoot I use the moments. The photos in the moments and collections can be shown on larger maps than the photos in standard albums, which are limited to thumbnail sized maps in the Info panel.

i only create standard albums for the items I want to see on the iPhone. The smart albums don't sync to the mobile devices with iCloud Photo Library.

Since we're working with albums here if you want to merge Album A into Album B do the following:

1 - open the sidebar with the Option+Command+S key combination.

2 - with the two albums visible in the sidebar click on A.

3 - select all of the photos in A.

4 - drag them onto the Album B icon in the sidebar to add them to B.

5 - verify all of the photos are in B.

    6 - delete A from the sidebar.

Again Thanks!  Information provided by everyone was exceedingly useful and resolved all of my questions.  It still seems Photo is just a bit more "clunky" than iPhoto was, but it at least works with current operating system.

And give it time. This is the first iteration, so as time goes by, it is sure to not only improve, but provide even more functionality than iPhoto! Good to get in on the ground floor, so that the learning curve as we all go through the evolution together, will be much easier. You may become one of our expert posters
