Q: HDMI not connected

When I plug the HDMI cable I have no problem to watch my Mac screen on the TV. Once in awhile, it does not work and the TV screen displays "not connected" while the Mac screen does not "shrink" as it usually does when plugging the HDMI cable. I tried 1. disk utility repair, Restart, unplug the TV, but those actions don't help. Usually I try the next day and it works as usual. The problem is clearly with the computer because my 2nd TV reacts the same. What is the problem?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

    Hi there keskeskeksa,

It sounds like you are connecting your TV to your computer and it isn't working exactly as it should. I would use the troubleshooting steps from the following article:

Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac

restart your Mac in safe mode to reset the display resolution to defaults.

If starting in safe mode doesn't resolve the issue, reset your Mac's NVRAM and SMC to reset the video ports on your Mac to their defaults.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Thank you, are are right. Another problem is when I connect an external HD and it does not appear on the screen. The same method solves this problem. Sometimes a simple "repair disk" from Disk Utilities will work.

Your answer worked fine until yesterday when there was no sound on the TV.

I checked Sound on System Preferences, and it showed that the sound was connected to my TV.

I tried Mac Media Player and VLC and got the same result.

Safe mode, P-ram resetting etc. Nothing has worked so far

Interesting, does the issue persist in a new admin account? Create a new one with the following article and let me know how that goes:

OS X El Capitan: Set up users on your Mac

    Add a user

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

    2. Click the lock icon  to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.

    3. Click the Add button  below the list of users.

    4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.

Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.

    5. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.

    6. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Using a password hint is recommended to help the user remember his or her password.

    7. Click Create User.

Thank you for your help, as for the 1st problem (cannot connect to TV screen) suddenly it worked again.

I will wait until the new problem (no sound) happens again and follow your solution. I will then let you know if it works.

    Thanks for the help.
