Need help turning Activation Lock off

My phone is broken (unusable) and in order to return it to the insurance company I must turn off Find My iPhone and Activation Lock. I followed the instructions they sent me on how to do it on the computer, and when I checked to confirm my Activation Lock was off it told me that it was still on, but the phone does not show up under Find My iPhone any more. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
