I can't partition my microSC card.

Hello. I would like to set three partitions on my microsd card with the sizes of .3, .3, and 7.3 gb. The partition utility gives this error after using those size settings. Am i doing anything wrong? Is the partition size too small for the file type? I am using fat (fat32) i think. Partitioning works with default even sizes. The micro sd card i have is 8gb.

You are right.

Apparently an SD card is treated differently from a USB stick. I performed my command on the latter without any problem. For SD card it is necessary to explicitly specify file system personalities in this case, because of the very small partition size. The generic MS-DOS is interpreted by default as FAT32. So, the final and working command is the following

diskutil partitiondisk /dev/disk3 3 MBR "ms-dos fat12" P1 0.3M "ms-dos fat12" P2 0.3M ms-dos P3 R

working on it. disk3 is some flash thing.

i will either try to:

use your solution

or

modify with

Usage: diskutil partitionDisk MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode

[numberOfPartitions] [APM[Format]|MBR[Format]|GPT[Format]]

[part1Format part1Name part1Size part2Format part2Name part2Size

part3Format part3Name part3Size ...]

I used:

"diskutil list" to find the name of the drive, and modified part of what you gave me. It finally worked, after i failed to follow your instruction the first time.

This is what i used:

diskutil partitiondisk /dev/disk4 3 MBR "ms-dos fat32" P1 0.3G "ms-dos fat32" P2 0.3G ms-dos P3 R

but i had to reformat (if that is the correct word) the drive because the original partitions were .3M, far to small for my use. Also, what is the benefit of using fat12 compared to 32? Maybe i could find online. I will be using this microsd for a raspberry pi and am not sure if fat12 could be used. Thank you for your help!

Here is the line that i used to reformat the drive:

diskutil eraseDisk FAT32 RASPBIAN MBRFormat /dev/disk4

test 0.3G and fat32
