If I sign with Metro PCS, will I be able to upgrade to a new iPhone when it comes time?

Hello all,

AT&T recently raised their unlimited data plan (they don't offer it anymore, I got grandfathered in) another $5. So now Im roughly paying $102 a month. So now Im thinking about switching to Metro PCS and pay around $30-$40 a month. I was wondering will I be able to upgrade to a new iPhone 7 (assume they're announced) in September when my 2yr deal expires if I'm with Metro PCS and will I be eligible for the phone discount like I've been able to have in the past years with AT&T or will I have to pay the full iPhone price.

Thank You

D.

PS: I noticed Metro PCS isn't listed in the drop down menu of carriers here on the Apple site.

Your 2 year deal is with ATT. Sounds like ATT owns your phone. They will not let you switch to another carrier without you fulfilling the 2 year commitment to them. This will mean buying your current phone and unlocking it. You can buy your way out of the contract if you contact ATT. Then you can switch to Metro PCS or any other carrier. To get iPhone 7 you will need to sell / trade in the current phone, which you will then own, for the new iPhone.

I see. Well, if you can cancel ATT and sell your iPhone at will, the question of discount for iPhone 7 depends on Metro PCS. Each carrier creates their own plan which may or may not include deals for iPhones. I do not have Metro PCS but now that we've clarified the 2 year contract question, will defer to someone who can comment on what they have done with iPhones in the past. Of course no one will be able to predict what they will do with a phone that doesn't exist yet. What I recall of the Apple deals is the phones are not discounted but are available. Again I can't comment on whether they make Metro PCS equipped phones at the ready.

Went to the Apple store today and they explained what I needed and didn't know. Apparently since I bought my phone in Sept '14 they've changed policy to where if you want an upgrade you can pay full price or get a discount by trading your current phone in. So yea, think I will hit up Metro PCS, because $102 for 1 line and it's not a business cell is insane and I only use 0.08gb of data a month so I can lose the unlimited AT&T data program and it won't hurt me.

EDIT: Thank you for your input UGADog, much appreciated.
