Hello.
Dropped ipad 2. Although caught it in mid drop it still hit the ground. Now there are white and grey lighting
down the left hand side. Could i have damaged back light or jarred something loose. Would anyone have any suggestions
to fix this problem
ipad is non returnable or under warranty. So i will have to fix myself

From your description of the problem I'm not sure if this might be a backlight issue or possible separation of the screen resulting in light bleed. Perhaps you could post of photo of your iPad to better illustrate exactly what you see.
In either case though, it does sound like the drop damaged the iPad. You could take it to an Apple store and get an out of warranty replacement at a lower cost than purchasing an ipad2 but since your's is a very early generation iPad I would suggest purchasing a newer model.
Your iPad is damaged - probably the digitizer. There are no user serviceable parts in iPads and this forum doesn't support user hardware self repair. Simply opening one will forfeit any future service by Apple. You can try IFixit if you must DIY.
