Q: iTunes works for iPod 5s but not iPhone 4s?

My iTunes (version 11.4 (18)) on my MacBook OS X (version 10.6.8) will connect to my iPod touch 5th gen. (version 8.3) but not my iPhone 4s (version 9.2.1). When i plug my phone in it keeps saying that i need to update to the newest iTunes, if I restart both the laptop and phone it goes to the the message saying that its locked with a passcode and once i unlock it and click trust this computer it goes right back to telling me to update the iTunes?

Well, you have a big problem. The bottom line is OS X 10.6.8 will not let you communicate to your iPhone.

Your iPhone is running the latest iOS (9.2.1). That version of iOS requires iTunes 12.3 or later to communicate. (The current iTunes is 12.3.2). iTunes 12.3 requires at least OS X 10.8.5 (current is OS X 10.11.3).

So you will need to upgrade your MacBook's OS X if you can, or purchase a new computer.
