AirDrop issues on 2010 MBP

I don't seem to get the option to set who can discover me at the bottom of the airdrop window. I tried deleting preferences, rebooting, re-joining wireless network, toggling firewall settings, and other thing mentioned on other discussions. The 2010 MBP shows up very infrequently and not at all stable on another newer MBP. The new MBP doesn't show up at all on the 2010 MBP. My iPhone doesn't see the 2010 MBP either. Could be logged into essentially the same user but on different computers be an issue? I'll have to try some 'experiments' with users next.

Any idea why AirDrop seem to not be full 'enabled'?

Thanks BobTheFisherman, but these would be two of the "other things mentioned on other discussions" I have read. The Macs have ever so briefly connected at random times, but only for a 15 seconds. I have been able to get a partially stable repeatable connection between them with the 'Search for an Older Mac' function. Still, the older Mac will drops off at some point. They don't simply reconnect afterwards, requiring a reboot of both Macs to reconnect. The 2010 Mac is simply too old to AirDrop to an iPhone or iPad, if I have read correctly. I'm still at a loss as to why the 2010 Mac has no options for who can discover it.
