Q: Mac Mail El Capitan - One gmail account login failed

Just updated an older Mac (2009 model) to El Capitan (updated to Yosemite previously and all was fine then). In Mac Mail - One of my gmail accounts login failed (one other gmail account routed through Mac Mail is just fine). Have tried in settings unchecking activation of the mail app box, rebooting and trying to reactivate and no change. Apple support pages keep asking to verify password is correct but I cannot see a password anywhere in the settings box where illustrated in other articles (it it supposed to be in the "account information" in system preferences, under "full name" but it is not for me).

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Unfortunately I think the only way that you can edit the password after the account is setup is to use "Edit SMTP server list" in Mail.

Thanks Duane for your reply. I did try this, and re-entered the password, and still the same error is coming up (that my one gmail account is offline and there is an error with username and / or password.

I'm thinking now of maybe somehow deleting the Mail app and reinstalling all over again. Any ideas about that?

I don't think that it is that drastic. How are you planning on reinstalling Mail? Reinstall El Capitan?

Deleting the account from Mail and from System Preferences -> Accounts and then readding the account is the next recommendation.

    Thanks again Duane.

Unfortunately that is not working either. Several times now I've attempted removing the account from System preferences - Accounts - clicking the '-' at the bottom of the list to deactivate, then closing everything and restarting the computer, opening mail and activiating the account again by selecting the '+' in the list in System preferences  - Accounts and then restarting and the issue still remains.

You're right though, I don't really want to install El Capitan all over again (especially since I don't have download limits to spare), so I might just give up and sign into google to access that account while in front of the computer for all the trouble it's causing.

I have exactly the same problem.  Even I tried deleting the old smtp setting and re-input the info, still won't work.  Please let me know if you have any solution!  Very frustrated!!!! Thanks.

Generally POP account is configured to IMAP account , please try some steps .

Open system preferences - internet accounts select the account that is not connecting a window will appear prompting to enter web mail address and password . So please enter .

If both are correct your mail account will get configured , you can also cross check by opening mail - windows - connection doctor that account has green dot .

Note : password is always changed by opening safari clicking on gmail / yahoo mail or .....whatever type your web mail in the field uncheck the box forget my password , then steps are there to be followed not directly from IMAP account .

You must have also formed a rescue mail with password while creating your web mail , that can also be used .

Thanks ! please ask if you are in doubts .
