Macintosh HD icon not on desktop

Erased my 13-inch Mid 2007 MacBook so I could give it to my granddaughter. The Macintosh HD icon is not on the desktop. How can I get it back on my desktop?

This assumes you now have a running OS X installed in the computer; since there are

other reasons why (especially if the system isn't fully or correctly installed) it may not.

  1. In the Finder, choose Preferences from the Finder menu.
  2. Click the General icon on the toolbar.
  3. Select "Hard disks" in the "Show these items on the desktop:" section.
  4. Close the Finder Preferences window.

The instructions in above article apply to Snow Leopard, Lion, and other OS X versions.

Just that some versions of OS X no longer by default show the Macintosh HD on desktop.

For many items, the built-in Help viewer can be used to help find answers.

If you have other topics of inquiry, please post them even though it may be

a while depending on time of day (half a world away, maybe?) before a reply.

Hopefully you can find a good book such as Missing Manual series offers for offline use.

For older OS X versions, I've found second-hand stores or thrift shops a fair source.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
