Resetting Apple ID in iCloud.

I have followed all the steps to change my Apple ID because the domain of my previous email address was shut down. Even after updating my software to iOS 9.2.1 I still can't change my Apple ID. The suggested process of temporarily changing the ID back to the old one doesn't help because it requires receiving a password on my old email address. Ideas?
