Q: Apple Mail Unexpected Crash OS X 10.11.3

2012 MacBook Air 11"

OS X 10.11.3

Apple Mail has been unexpectedly crashing the last few weeks. Trying to figure it out. Crashes are pretty random, but I do notice it often crashes after a restart. I've tried SafeBoot Mode, but it still crashes there. I have the "Crash Report" from both Regular and SafeBoot modes. Below is some text from the Console.app

    Hi vizualgraphix,

Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

I see that the Mail app is quitting unexpectedly and the behavior occurs in safe mode as well.

You can try the advice in If Mail unexpectedly quits when viewing certain messages. I'd also recommend the steps in the Recommended replies from Linc Davis and Eric Root in these threads: Mail quits unexpectantly & Opening Sent Mail Quit Unexpectedly.

Since Mail quits in safe mode, reinstall OS X if the symptoms continue after trying all of the steps above--How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.

    Best Regards.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

    Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Information learned from Linc Davis. Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Thank you, I will give this a try. I can backup and reinstall if needed, but will try Eric's suggestions below first.
