Q: El Capitan upgrade problems

I just upgraded to El Capitan and cannot access my photos from iPhoto.  Anyone have a suggestion?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

The only iPhoto version working with El Capitan is iPhoto 9.6.1.  Dod you already update to this version?

The iPhoto icon will be missing from the Dock, but open the Applications folder and drag the iPhoto icon back to the Dock.

 

If the iPhoto icon looks crossed out, your iPhoto version is incompatible. Not all iPhoto versions can be updated any longer.

iPhoto has been discontinued by Apple and is no longer sold at the AppStore.  The Updates tab of the AppStore does no longer work for iPhoto at all.

You can only update iPhoto by reinstalling from your Purchases history.  Does iPhoto show for you on the fourth tab "Purchased" at the AppStore? If not, try to unhide it: Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support

 

Then follow the instructions in Barney's user Tip:    Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

if you already updated to iPhoto, but it cannot open your iPhoto Library, post back with  ore information on what happens, when you try to open iPhoto.

Photos for Mac should be in the Dock with a rainbow colored flower icon. Drag your iPhoto Library onto this icon and Photos will migrate it.

    Basically iPhoto is dead - even if you get 9.6.1 you can no longer order print products as of 3/31/2016 and some future upgrade will totally break it - Photos works well adn most people prefer to iPhoto once they learn it - better integration, better editing, faster and more reliable

    Your best route is to migrate to Photos and learn it

    Thanks LarryHN and Leonie!   Unfortunately, I did not upgrade iPhoto after purchasing in July 2011.  Since it came with my iMac, I have never purchased it separately.  The big issue I have right now is that El Capitan is hiding my libraries.  I can't find them in finder, or anywhere else.  I know they're in there, because I can still point the screen saver at it, and the pictures still show.  Any suggestions on where to look?  I think I'm going to end up dragging my iMac down to the store.   Thanks again!

    By default it is in your Pictures folder - if it is not there then you moved it and only you know where you moved it to

     

    The first time you launch Photos it should migrate the last used iPhoto library to Photos

    Hi Larry,

    It didn't default to the pictures folder in this case, probably since I hadn't upgraded in a long time.  The fix was to hold the "Option" key while opening photos, then selecting "other library" and clicking on my old library.  Unfortunately, El Capitan hid the file, but the good news is that it wasn't lost.

    The default location for the iPHoto library has been the pictures folder since at least iPhoto '08 adn I believe earlier than that

     

    and El Captain does not hide the iPhoto library - I have no idea what you are talking aobt - but it sound like you have resolved yoru issue so tah tis good
