Macbook Pro battery not charging

Hi there, just before I opened my Macbook Pro to find it on 2% so naturally I plugged the charger in. The light didn't come on at first which I thought nothing of because sometimes it takes a moment but it hasn't come on AT ALL and when I click on the battery bar (which has a power plug symbol thing on it btw) it says "Battery is Not Charging" but also "Power Source: Power Adapter". I've also tried flipping the charger both ways.

The weird thing is it's stayed on 2% for a while now even though it says it's not charging, so at least it's not running out of battery completely. I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the fact the charger I've been using for a few months now isn't Apple (my original got chewed by the dog and on a student budget I couldn't afford to splurge the $129 at the time so I opted for a knockoff one from a laptop repairs place that looked like it'd do the job) I've noticed it getting quite hot when I've been using it and such. I do plan to buy a proper Apple charger again eventually, probably next paycheck I guess if it looks like this one has had it, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this problem for the time being or if it's a problem with my Macbook, I have lectures I need to watch online so I don't need my computer to die on me right now :/
