Q: Final Cut Express 4.0.1 crashes on launch in 10.6.8

Final Cut Express 4.0.1 (been removed with FCS in reinstalled) crashes on launch while loading or looking at all the audio plug ins.

Technical: Macbook pro 8,1 Intel 2.3 GHz Core i5, OS X 10.6.8, 6 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 380 GB HD (139 GB available), Intel Graphics 3000 video card Final Cut 4.0.1

I have been reading about this for a few days, and please do not ask if it was installed properly or suggest I take it into an Apple Store which is 1500 miles away.

This appears to be something to do with audio files-plugins. I have gone to HD/Library?Plugins and removed the whole folder, but I do not see Sonic Birth in there. I remember years ago I had a similar problem and Apple had me remove a series of theng (after making me install a fresh system (which did not work)

Has anyone ever found anyone who actually has solved this problem?

Has anyone found a database, knowledgebase of things, i.e. audio drivers/plugins/[reference files that conflict with Final Cut Express?

Is there a 3rd party program that creates a log of the launch which might show me Where and When it crashes?

Please do not fill this question up with Me Toos or the generic did you install into an admin or did you install properly. The answer is YES.

I am seeking only information from people who have solved this, know where all the audio plugins and preference files that might conflict are, names, and locations if not in the "Preferences" folder.

Thanks In Advance

You referenced HD/Library/?Plugins ... there is no folder with that name in 10.6.8 ... does the ? indicate some missing text?

In my experience most audio plugins, esp. third party plugins, reside in <HD>/Library/Audio/Plugins.

It's also possible for plugins to be in the following locations (including child folders of the followng):

    • <HD>/Library/Application Support/<name of application and or plugin>
    • ~/Library/Application Support/<name of application and or plugin> and/or ~/Library/Audio/Plugins/<name of application and or plugin>  (both in your user account Library folder as opposed to the <HD>/Library folder)
    • Other locations impossible to list because they can vary from vendor to vendor & plugin to plugin.

I urge caution about trashing whole folders.   You could accidentally delete something you shouldn't ... plus some plugins have additional files in other system locations (preferences, extensions, caches, etc.) ... and some even install kernel extensions and hidden files.  Again, it can vary from vendor to vendor & plugin to plugin.  It's best to follow the uninstall instructions for each vendor's plugin rather than just deleting files & folders.

Sorry about my saying no folder HD/Lib/Audio/plugins. I do intdeed have one.

I have a vague memory of this problem cropping up years ago, but that was some 40,000 miles and 2 computers ago. I am even finding a problem loading a clean system onto an external HD.

I know Apple had a list because the senior tech who walked me through had a clear list he was working from. It is too bad they do not send that in their email follow up. Be really useful, or to have it in a knowledgebase.

So does anyone know of WHICH plugins cause a problem?
