Q: messages, facetime, safari, ... don't work

Hello,

Anytime I quit messages or facetime, it is never able to start again - keeps bouncing at the dock pane for a minute or so and then nothing... It always only works once unless I shut the machine down (or get into the safe mode). The same for Contacts, Maps and Notes.

When I open Safari and click the address bar - beach ball keeps spinning forever.

In system preferences, I can't access security and privacy settings - results into settings error message.

In iTunes, when I connect the iPad and I'm asked to authorize the MacBook by entering my Apple ID, it never logs in when I do so - beach ball forever again. Actually this happens almost always when I'm asked to submit Apple ID credentials, no matter if it's iTunes, App Store, ...

Many applications, which are not Apple products, got stuck after an attempt to save a new file. E.g. from MS Excel I simply can't save a new file, because whenever there's the need to choose the directory/destination before saving the file - beach ball pops out and never stops. The same happens if I attempt to save as PDF from google chrome's printing wizard. I believe this is a general issue, not related to the app.

Whenever I try to start the macbook in safe mode, everything works correctly, also it works correctly after I leave the safe mode and get into the regular mode, but all of the above returns very quickly after I'm out of the safe mode.

There are countless issues with my macbook or OSX. What do I do now please? I send more reports after force quitting apps then I do regular work. Please advise. Thank you.

Martin

    Hi,

    Close all apps.

Open the Applications/Utilities folder and start the Console App.

Make a note of the time and start one App.

The Console app should get for lines about what is going on from that  point in time.

Copy them and Paste them here (annonymise them as required).

This may give people an idea of where to go next with this.

I usually answer Question on Messages but this seems more global than that.

If a McAfee "anti-virus" product is installed, remove it by following these instructions.

Note that if you have already tried to uninstall the software, you may have to reinstall it in order to finish the job. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software again.

Please sign out of iCloud in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. No data will be removed from the servers, and you can retrieve it by signing back in. That said, you should always have a current archive of the data for safety's sake, even if you don't sign out.

If you use iCloud Keychain, when you sign back in to iCloud follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set it up on an additional device.

    Hi,

    Based on this one line

    14/03/16 20:25:11,664 Messages[2866]: <SOAccountStatusHelper: 0x7fc6dbd06af0> Timed out waiting for value for SOAccountStatusOfflineOnQuitApplicationKey

Go to the Messages App > Preferences > General Section and change the settings for "When I Quit, Set the Status to Off Line"

It does not matter what the current setting is as the line is saying the app can't find a value.

If you only have the Bonjour and iMessages accounts it may also pay to make the Bonjour one Active, as the above setting does not effect iMessages.

It is possible you have lost "Ownership" of the file involved or the Permissions to Read and Write to it.

    This line:

    14/03/16 20:37:43,953 sandboxd[123]: ([280]) storeaccountd(280) deny file-write-create /Users/martin/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ProductionBag

Suggests you don't have permissions to Read and Write to the file listed at the end.

The path is the same as ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ProductionBag

    Open a Finder window

Use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and copy the path minus the final file into the Dialogue box.

Once in the folder (com.apple.Safari) right-click on the ProductionBag.

Scroll to the Bottom where it tell you the Read and Write Permissions.

Your Shortname should appear with Read and Write permissions

Highlight your name then use the little cogwheel under the list.

This should reveal a phrase that says "Make yourshorname (me) the Owner"

It should be greyed out to say this task is done.

Some of the other Console messages also seem to hint at apps (mainly Calendar) not being able to access Caches.

In this thread Linc has some Terminal Instructions for checking the number files and folders you might not have the right Permissions for and the Command to restore them

Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs Error

Linc, this seems to help. After signing out of the iCloud, the issues seems to be gone. Do you know, how do I make it work with iCloud on? Thank you!

Do you use iCloud Contacts? If so, do you also synchronize Contacts with another network service, such as Google?

Please sign back in to iCloud and see what happens. If the problem comes back, uncheck the Contacts box in the iCloud preference pane and test.
