if phone is lost, would changing of the account password disable the phone with old password to log in and send location data?

I would like to prevent someone to log to cloud by changing the password, cause I'm affraid he might delete my cloud data.

I know that, thx, but if icloud is signed in, even if i change the password , one who has the phone might still delete backuped data on the icloud ?
Do you have a passcode ON & Find My iPhone ON before the lost?
If yes, no one can delete your iCloud backup.
