I understand you are not able to update or install apps with iTunes on your Mac.
It sounds like there is a problem connecting to the iTunes Store for which the following articles should help.
If you can’t connect to the iTunes Store - Apple Support
Advanced steps for fixing issues with iTunes Store connection - Apple Support
If those don't get you going, please let us know the details.
Take care.

Mar 15, 2016 10:24 AM in response to kim macqueenby Mikel085,Hey Kim,
On an iPhone when the apps are greyed out, it means that the apps have not fully installed yet. Try tapping and holding on one of them till it says waiting under the app. Another thing you want to check is that the phone has enough storage to install the updates. The apps will stay greyed out if it cannot install an update or install the app altogether if there is not enough space for the app. This usually happens when restoring from a back up.

Mar 16, 2016 10:59 AM in response to Mikel085by kim macqueen,Thanks for your reply Mike1085. The icons on my phone are normal. However, if I: >ITunes, >icon of phone, >apps - the list of apps on my phone are all greyed out. Some say "update", some say "install" but I can't do anything. If I >ITunes Store to download a new app, the new app does not appear.
