Q: Index.html file missing when I upload Iweb website to go Daddy

So I built a website using Iweb.

I uploaded it to Godaddy using Fetch.

The files are all there in the correct folder but the website will not open.

When Go Daddy support looked at the files, they said the problem is the index.html file is missing.

There is a zipped file, index.html.gz but they are not familiar with it and it is not in the proper format to use.

Has anyone else had this issue and do you know the solution? I've been trying to launch my site for 48 hours now.

Support says that everything else appears to be fine.

Thanks

It all depends on how you have uploaded the site?

Have you uploaded your site folder or just the contents of your site folder?  If you have uploaded the site folder, then you need 2 index files - one index.html file will be inside the site folder and the other will sit outside pointing in.

If you have just uploaded the contents to your Public_html folder on GoDaddy, then you will just have one index.html file and that it is.

Don't know how you got index.html.gz.  What you need is either  one or two index.html files and that is it.

Try publishing your site again from iWeb to a local folder and checking the files that have been produced and if the index.html file is there.  It should be, but there should be nothing zipped or otherwise, just either one or two files with index.html.

    They should both be there.

Is this the first site you have built?  If so, why chose iWeb?  You do know that it is an unsupported product that has not been updated for at least 6 years now?

Think about moving to something else and using supported software.

I uploaded the only file in my iWeb folder... Domains2

Let me mention I have made other websites with iWeb, and uploaded to Godaddy, and never a problem. (But it's been a few years)

It's just what iWeb uploaded index.html.gz. I have know idea how to get the others you mentioned when Apple only gives me one file.

I saw one (index.html) when I did this in the local folder, and tried using that index file to add it to Godaddy but didn't work

    They should both be there.

    no

    If so, why chose iWeb?

I trusted Apple, stupidly apparently. Worked fine before. It's on my computer and free. didn't know about all the issues. a few months and many hours down the drain.

I didn't know until this happened. Why have it if there is not support?

Think about moving to something else and using supported software.

I will thanks for your help...

Some people who have had iWeb in the past still like to use it although it is no longer supported.

You cannot get iWeb now and it is now supplied on new Macs purchased and has not been for a long time now, since it was discontinued.

The only way that you get iWeb now is to purchase it from Amazon or an old install disc on an old Mac, or if you have it installed on an old Mac that had it.

Apple withdrew support for iWeb and stopped supplying it when MobileMe was withdrawn in favour of iCloud as they no longer need it.  iWeb is not still around now, but some people still have it and use it.

I have built many of my sites using iWeb, but moved on to other methods a long time ago now.  I mainly now use Drupal and WordPress for my sites.

Why not try EverWeb instead from Rage Software?  It is a supported product which its own forums and is very like iWeb to use.

Well Ethmoid now I find out about EverWeb.

After working on my site for literally months (OK I am slow) fine tuning it, getting it just right, finally ready to upload it. Buy hosting site. Have uploaded it 8 times now, different ways, no luck. I too like working on Iweb. I didn't know it wasn't supported. I bought a new computer 3 years ago and I thought it came on it, but maybe I moved it over from old computer.

So to answer your question, yes I guess I will have to switch now, after months of work to a new program, but it sure is frustrating as I have a website I am very happy with, ready to go.

    Thanks for your help.

If you purchased a new Mac 3 years ago, then iWeb would definitely NOT have been on it.

You can purchase EverWeb as a standalone and use it with the hosting that you have already or you can switch and purchase the whole hosting and package from Rage, so that you can use their hosting too - the choice is yours.

It is currently being developed and they are up to version 1.9 beta and it won't be long before version 2 comes along and you can do so much more with it out of the box.

They have very good forum support, so if you get stuck post your problem there and they will get back to you quickly or other forum members will also.

iWeb is only going to get worse now, so if you have a new site, then get EverWeb now and you can create exactly the same thing in EverWeb, perhaps even better and you can just cut and paste from iWeb into EverWeb.
