Q: Macs and Active Directory

I have about 30 Macintosh computers and 70 Windows PC's at my company.  We use Active Directory.  All computers in the company are bound the active directory server, and we have 2 backup AD servers.  My understanding is if all servers exist in the same forest, that if the preferred server goes down or cant be reached, that by default the machines bound to the domain should look for the backup[s].  The issue I am experiencing is when the main AD server goes down, none of the Mac's on our network can authenticate on the network.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
