Found Solution to using Mouse with IPad (no Jailbreak)

I've searched high and low for the answer to this question (which seems to be a common problem) for people who wish to use their iPad in place of their laptop.

We already get to use our Bluetooth keyboards, but what about a mouse?

I've seen many videos of people using a mouse on their iPads, but ALL of them required a jailbreak. (I personally don't wanna ruin my warranty so I stay far away from that method.)

Last week I saw a video of a man using a USB to lighting adapter with an ordinary wireless mouse.

http://youtu.be/sh8nN7Fv0Zk

So I decided to check it out for myself.

I went on Amazon and found a simple Amazon Basics USB to lighting adapter. ($8)

I plugged the lightning port into my power slot on the bottom off my ipad and plugged the USB chip from my Logitech Wireless mouse in the other end of the adapter.

My iPad discovered the mouse right away and to my surprise, a cursor appeared on the screen!

I've been successfully using my Apple BT keyboard and Logitech mouse with my IPad 4 and I am very satisfied with the new-found abilities.

It allows me to type notes in class without having to use the touch screen at all!

I suspect the solution will eventually be something like running the wireless mouse interface thru the keyboard and then piggybacking into the iPad. I’ve never seen anything like this (probably with good reason) but since keyboards have cursor movement control, not only <>^v but some have features like highlight to end of line, maybe someone at Logitech can figure it out. Dunno. Just daydreaming.

I was just thinking out loud.

IOS has cursor like functions, you can use two fingers on the glass keyboard to use it like a cursor. I was just wondering if a BT mouse could connect to a BT keyboard and the pickyback the keyboard link to the IOS device as a exploit.

I don't know if anybody's tried it before. Do you? Just exploring a though about an exploit no one to my knowledge has tried.

I have Ipaid Air2 I believe. I have a blue tooth keyboard too, it comes with a cover so it looks like a mini laptop (its A hard cover), anyway my question is would the Logitech mouse be compatible with my ipad? AMazon will list what it is compatible with, yes?? And do yo know the pricing of the mouse: so i would have to buy the mouse and the wire to plug it in the bottom slot (assuming the slot where u plug it in to charge...so you gotta get the mouse, the wire and probably also another wire to charge...or do they all come together or buy separately ?? Do you kno the price range? Different colors ? I want pink =P please soooo get backi to me and let me knowl. Thank you i

That video is from 2010 when the first iPad came out!

The author of the video was using a bunch of different apps at that time.

One of these apps was an older version of Apple's Pages.

I really doubt that this BT mouse functionality is working now much less working on your older iPad 4 with iOS 9.2.1

I would show some video proof of this if I were you as I do not believe for a second that you have gotten this to work.

Especially on an older model iPad like the iPad 4

I have the latest iPad Pro and no BT mouse I own will work with ANY iDevice on any newer or current iOS version.

I call B.S. on your posting about this.

I find it plausible.

The author did not say they were using a "Bluetooth Mouse", they said seeing a jailbroken device [gave them the idea] to simply connect a USB adapter to the Lightening connector, the plug in a USB to RF mini adapter made by Logitech as an experiment.

There was nothing methodical or theory based, they just gave it a go and reported "it worked".

After that they used the USB-to-RF Logitech mouse in concert with their Bluetooth Keyboard which was already paired as expected.. two very different devices to achieve the goal of Keyboard and Mouse pointer.

We know that Apple from time to time introduces code and descriptors for testing or possible future release.. support comes and goes mostly unobserved. Unless its found in a code audit by developers and beta testers and trumped out as "proof" of some nefarious hidden objective. But we also know Apple is regardless wrestling, somewhat in 'Public' about the issue of pointers on the iPad Pro and the re-imagined laptop/desktop to compete with the Microsoft Surfacebook.

I find it entirely "possible" that an update to iOS 9.2.1 happen to include "unofficial" testing support for a USB detected "pointing device". And since Logitech is a very common brand and easily sourced.. by chance one of its PCI:VEN:ID combinations happen to match the one they were testing with. Or merely the USB HID class.

Any specific detail on the exact Logitech Mouse model would be greatly appreciated, a complete decription of the PCI identifier in the iOS connected devices would be even more useful.

If a mistake was made and the device was jailbroken at the time.. even knowing "that" would save many people a lot of time trying to replicate the discovery.

Sincerely,

Thanks!

This OP never responded to any of the posts here.

If the Original Poster had an iPad 4 running OS 9, I doubt this person actually got a mouse to work!

See my above post about that video being from 2010.

The iPad being used is the first generation one which only runs iOS 5.1.1.

At that time, with that iOS version, it may have been possible to accomplish this, but not now in 2016

I know this because I have one.

You are not going to get this to work, at least for the forseeable future.

I have a large iPad Pro that is only a year old and can't get any mouse to work with it, much less a Bluetooth one.

Return the mouse!

You will not suceed with this any of this you will just be wasting your time.

All that stated you can move around the text "I" beam insertion point cursor by bringing up the iPad's software keyboard, do a two finger single tap to turn the entire keyboard area gray colored and into a gigantic trackpad area where you can easily control the position of the text insertion point "I" beam cursor.

You can highlight text and lines of text by doing a two finger double tap on the iOS software keyboard.

Then, do a single two finger tap on the keyboard area to fine tune the text selection.

That is as close to a mouse or regular trackpad that iOS is, currently, going to get.

Good Luck!

I Bought one of those Lighting to USP connectors but no joy.

I Tried a Logitec wireless connection mouse and also a Kensington one, both worked on the iMac but NOT the iPhone 6 plus or the iPhone 5C or my iPad Air !!

Why don't the boffins use a modicom of common sense and do what the CUSOMER wants for a change, instead of bowing to the marketing directors.

The idevices obviously have the hardware to accept a mouse, and one can get it to work but has to go to outside sources who are making a fortune out of Apple's apparent stuborness.

Come on Apple, let your heart matech you product, it would be so useful to have a mouse work on the ipad. It would not affect the sales of your other products. Let us use the iPad as a perfect little computer when we have to leave home for a while.

Incidentally the Lighting/USP connector I bought allows a keyboard to be used with the above mentioned idevices but, again, who needs it - the keyboard supplied with the iMac also works on the idevices, so no need for foreigners there.

Hi all,

There is a solution and I'm using it without any problems.

The method I'm using is for accessing a remote computer and use my local Bluetooth mouse (not any mouse but a special one)

With this solution I finally can use my iPad to access my remote computers at work/home/cloud Mac or Pc, with proper mouse support.
