can't add phone number to iMessage

Okay so a week ago my messages were syncing and i could send and receive messages from my mac. All of the sudden my mac doesn't receive any iMessages from my phone number only when they are sent to my mac through my email address. Ive tried adding my phone number through preferences, but it only says "add email". My phone number is synced to my iCloud and my contact card on my Mac has my phone number in it. I don't understand why this happened but all of the sudden it stopped working. I just updated my computer as well.
