Q: how to insert fonts from font book

I can drag a font from font book when I'm typing on my website in Safari but I'm sure there's a more sophisticated action in OS X El Capitan. Where do I start looking to find out how ?

    Hi Louis,

When I open the website to edit I am accessing the site via Safari or so I thought, you just made me curious how else I can do it.  Anyhow, when i edit I need to insert the occasional font that is not available other than from Font Book.  In Word for Mac & other forms I can for example press C+8 & presto, there's my é.  I can't do that here while I'm typing this.  I need to go to Font Book & drag the character into this sentence. What I was hoping for someone to tell me is that there's a way to insert a font into here without having to open the Font Book, look for the font & then drag it into this sentence. Can I ?

    regards

It sounds like you are entering text into a text field in a website, like a name or address field?  In that case the only text is what the site is setup to use and display.

    Hi Old Toad,

Thank you for your reply.  Looks as though I'm locked into dragging fonts, never mind, it's not the end of the world.

    regards

You can "learn" how to use the modifier keys from the Keyboard Viewer where drag&drop or the viewer will no longer be necessary.

What websites are you referring to?

This site allows several different fonts to be used when you;re in the Advanced editor window:

But the site has to be setup that way.

Your question doesn't actually involve "fonts".  To make special characters you can normally just hold down the key for the base letter and choose what you need from the popup menu which appears.  Or use the standard Mac shortcuts:  é is made via option/alt plus e, then e.

I think the nomenclature you are using is part of the problem. You don't insert a "font" or drag "fonts" into a website. A font is a collections of characters all in the same style, such s Helvetica. It sounds like you are talking about typing special characters based on your example. Such as àáâäæã… etc. which you can do by holding down the letter you want accented for a second or two which brings up a popup menu of characters. You can also insert characters from the keyboard and emoji & symbols viewers.

I see I type too slow.

    dialabrain,

thank you & yes, you've hit the nail on the head.  What I erroneously referred to as Font is in actual fact a Character or even a symbol according to Edit.

The holding down of the key is about as simple as it can get (if someone tells you that is).

Many thanks to all of you for your patience with this old dog trying to learn new tricks.

    Cheers
