Q: Server NetInstall Diagnostic image can't be edited or changed from default

Troubleshooting a machine and noticed that it's not booting into NetInstall for diagnostic testing. Looking at the Server (10.11), the default image is Diagnostics and it has access restrictions on it. I can click on the settings for that image, but they never come up and then Server.app becomes unresponsive to any other clicks in the Images window of the NetInstall tab.

I think I need to make another image the default, like Apple Service Toolkit 1.5.17v12, in order for booting to happen. I can change a computer's default System Preference > Startup Disk, but that's not always going to be possible.

I'm going to keep troubleshooting it, but I'd really like some assistance.

Thanks!

Server.app has had problems in the past where it would react badly when given an NBImageInfo.plist file that was missing keys that it was expecting.

You might try editing the file manually to change it, or compare it to a “functional” image to see if any keys are missing.

    Thanks for that.

I started removing images from the NetBootSP0 folder and it seems to be working now. Slowing adding them back to figure out where the issue is. I've only left AppleDiagnosticOSs, AppleServiceToolkit, AST64bit, and AST Legacy. Some of others are deployment NBIs that may be causing the issue.
