Seagate Plus and Mac 10.6.8

I've just bought a Seagate Backup Plus which I now find (it was not clear when researching the Seagate) is compatible only with OS X 10.7 or later. Mine is 10.6.8. Ironically I bought the SBP to back up before upgrading my OS. Seagate website states the disc can be re-formatted to work with existing version (10.6.8 to 10.7.5). Is it safe to do this? Are there any potential problems? Assuming it's OK, should I use the Time Machine software or rely on the Seagate drive? The idea was to back up data externally as I assumed any virus or malware attack would affect everything including the T/M.

Hi,

You can use Disk Utility (found in the application's utility folder) to format the the Segate. Use "OSX Extended Journaled" as the format.

Time machine has internal integrity checking, and if any particular backup set fails to pass ongoing tests, it will notify you.

You can also use multiple external backup drives and Time Machine will alternate between them.

The first backup will take a good long while.

This does not affect your running machine.
